The NSW Government has three teaching programs targeting responsible pet ownership and prophylactic pet interaction.
- 'We Are Family' – targeting the kid and pet relationship from pregnancy to preschool years.
- 'Living Safely with Dogs' – targeting iv – v year old pre-schoolhouse children.
- 'Living Safely with Pets' – targeting 5 – 8 year one-time primary schoolhouse children.
The programs aim to educate parents and children near how to interact safely with pets.

Pet Boondocks (www.pets.nsw.gov.au) – Victor and Victoria'south Pet Town is an animated interactive tool for children based on the programs' safe messages. A tablet version has also been developed and is bachelor free in App stores.
In recognition of the importance of pet cats and dogs to the NSW community, the Government minister for Local Government established the Responsible Pet Ownership Reference Grouping (Reference Grouping).
The primary purpose of the Reference Group is to provide advice to the Minister for Local Authorities on strategic companion animals management issues to promote responsible pet ownership. This advice is on:
- responsible pet ownership policy and legislative development and review
- implementation of recommendations from the Companion Animals Taskforce accepted by the NSW Government and other policies developed by the Office of Local Government
- merging policy issues involving responsible pet ownership in NSW, and
- best do relating to the management of cats and dogs in NSW.
The Reference Group does not provide advice on matters more than appropriately considered by the NSW Brute Welfare Advisory Quango.
Reference Group members take a broad range of skills and feel relevant to the review and implementation of policies related to the management of cats and dogs. The membership is chosen from a broad range of organisations with item expertise in responsible pet ownership and companion animal matters.
The Reference Group meets at least twice and no more than than four times per year.
The Reference Group may invite further NSW Government representatives or external experts to nourish the meetings as required and may call on other relevant experts to course smaller, informal subcommittees and/or to provide advice on specific recommendations or other matters as needed.
Authoritative back up, including inviting members, organising meetings and business papers is provided by the Office of Local Regime, who allocate an Officer to human activity every bit the Secretariat for the Reference Group and can exist contacted at RPORG@olg.nsw.gov.au .
The Companion Animals Taskforce was established past the Government minister for Local Regime and the Minister for Principal Industries to provide advice on key companion creature issues, including strategies to reduce the rate of companion animal euthanasia.

- Euthanasia rates and re-homing options for surrendered or abased companion animals
- The breeding of companion animals including the practices of "puppy farms"
- The sale of companion animals
- The microchipping and desexing of companion animals
- Electric current education programs on "responsible pet ownership"
- Dangerous dogs
- Any other high priority companion fauna issues that go apparent to the Taskforce.
